For overweight dogs, it is important to reduce their caloric intake and increase their activity level. Cut back on treats and table scraps, and feed them a nutritious and balanced diet that is appropriate for their age and activity level


MEDICAL CAUSES


Tumors cause a condition called Cushing’s disease, which leads to Weight loss or gain. Tumor heart or Liver Disease, Thyroid, Obesity, BCS, Diabetes, and Gastrointestinal disease also trigger weight gain.



PRESCRIBED DRUGS


A number of prescription drugs can cause weight gain when it is provided for a long period of time. (If your dog is gaining weight due to any sort of side effects, the veterinarian must look into this and try switching to a different drug or any alternative mode of therapy).



THE FOOD CHOICE


Food which are high in protein or fat can also make your pet fat. Sweet potatoes and Pumkin put on the weight. Just like human dogs gain weight if they eat too much. Pay attention to feeding guidelines to make sure the dog is not over-fed.



CHANGING FOOD WITH AGE


As dogs get older, they have different nutritional requirements. Puppy food contains more calories than adult food because it is designed to promote growth and development. Adult food has low calories but is high in fiber and sufficient protein and fat for dogs as they age. It is important to switch the food according to their age.



LACK OF EXERCISE


Exercise burns calories and promotes mental and physical health in dogs. Some breeds need more exercise than other, but all dogs can get benefit from a daily walk. A lack of exercise can increase the risk of weight gain.



BREED


The breed is a known risk factor in dogs and official breed descriptions may promote this obesity risk factor.

 

SIGN OF WEIGHT INCREASEMENT

· Take a look from above and see if the waist can be noticed.

· From the side view your dog’s belly tucks up as lead to its hind legs

· No need to press hard you can simply feel the ribs at the sides.

· Their skin might start to get dandruff; coat may turn oily as compared to normal days.

· In some cases, the dogs do gain weight without eating extra. Then you must discuss it with your veterinarian.

 

THE COMMON CAUSES

· Changes in diet

· Overeating

· Genetic

· Hormones problem (polycystic ovary syndrome or Cushing’s syndrome)

 

CONTROL METHODS

· Now that your dog has gained weight. The following tip will help you to control it.

· A must evening walk, make them exercise will surely work in reducing fat.

· Limited treats and snacks.

· Pay attention while you fill their bowl remember not to give too much or any amount of extra food.

· Look for a high protein but low carb diet.
